There was still some light, so in order o capture the this image, I slapped on an combo ND/Polarizer filter to smooth out the fog and get the shutter speed to about 30 seconds. The image almost felt like something buried in snow, hence the white satin title to the image.

Again to no surprise, I used a telephoto lens for this one. Differently than most of my compositions, I went as wide as the lens would go to capture the layers of the sky above the fog and the bridge. It's that time of day where the greyish blue layer is actually the earth's shadow.

New Photo Added - Clarity In The Midst Of Confusion https://www.seanpedruco.com/blog/2021/4/new-photo-added---clarity-in-the-midst-of-confusion This one was taken on top of Slacker Hill in the Marin Headlands. It's a popular spot for low fog and The Golden Gate Bridge, but can be susceptible to wind and atmospheric haze depending on weather conditions especially when using a telephoto lens. It's easily accessed by a 20 minute hike via a fire road from parking spots along Conzelman Road.

This image was captured on a full frame sensor and telephoto lens on the short end (70mm) and the composition is most certainly not golden ratio or rule of thirds. I opted for more of a diagonal or competing comparison of the fog and bridge with the San Francisco skyline in the distance. This is partially because I didn't want to change lenses in the brisk wind as dust spots are more of a pain in the rear when post processing than anything else.

On the processing side of it, this is one of the rare occasions where I dodged alittle bit of the hill to pbring out the detail without increasing the noise or using noise reduction. I tend to opt for more of a natural look, but I need just alittle bit more luminosity in the details there.

On a interesting facts side of things from here, you can see four bay area bridges from here on a clear, crisp day or evening. Those bridges would be The Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, and Dumbarton Bridge. For future reference sake, you can see an additional bay area Bridge, The Richmond / San Rafael Bridge, from the top of Angel Island....bringing that total to five.

Hope everyone had a Happy Easter!

I kind of miss these kind of days.

New Photo Added - Looking Through The Mist https://www.seanpedruco.com/blog/2021/3/new-photo-added---looking-through-the-mist We have another one of The Golden Gate Bridge and a portion of San Francisco in fog taken from The Marin Headlands. It's shot relatively wide at 34mm on a full frame sensor. I'm sure you'll really start to notice over time that I do have a preference for telephoto images, but this time wide was needed to show the elements going on here This one depicts another instance of tule fog, but this time we have some higher fog that gives a kind of overcast feel. The instances of the fog coming in from both directions and at different heights kind of creates something relatively unique even if there wasn't much color that morning.

Got out here early on a January morning, so I was there to shoot predawn, dawn, and what would normally be sunrise. The one thing about getting here predawn is you're able to maximize your time and shoot at four designated intervals of light in photography. Yes, you can do that in reverse and shoot golden hour, sunset, twilight, and blue hour in the evening. My preference is the morning, but things like light origin or direction of the light may determine your individual choice. Looking Through The MistLooking Through The MistThis was one of those winter mornings where we had an instance of low tule fog flowing out through The Golden Gate Bridge from the valley and a higher fog flowing in from The Pacific Ocean

New Photos Added - Gently Wrapping & Where Only The Tallest Buildings See The Sun https://www.seanpedruco.com/blog/2021/3/new-photos-added---gently-wrapping-where-only-the-tallest-buildings-see-the-sun This is one of those rare mornings nowdays where I made the trek up to Slacker Hill in The Marin Headlands for the low fog and was alone all morning. It was probably a combination of the fog being too thick, it being pretty windy, and a weather prediction app not recommending it (sarcasm).

Basically this is a comparison post for showing the power of focal distance. These images were shot at the same time or at least within a few minutes. One is at 40mm showing the foreground on the hill leading to the north tower of The Golden Gate Bridge and also revealing the highest four buildings in the city of San Francisco off in the distance. The second image is focus directly on the buildings above the fog at 400mm. Both images are uncropped. You can just seen the difference in the details.

Because of the wind, mist, and dust, I prefer to not switch lenses in these conditions. I honestly do that because I really hate cleaning my sensor all the time and it also seems that when I send my camera into the manufacturer, they never seem to do a good job. Trust me, life is much easier when you are cloning out fewer dust spots when shooting at smaller apertures. Although the same camera manufacturer, these two images were shot using different cameras, lenses, and tripods. The weight kind of sucks and has taken a toll on my neck and back over the years on the hike up, but it's well worth it.

New Photo Added - What Was Old Is Now New https://www.seanpedruco.com/blog/2021/3/new-photo-added---what-was-old-is-now-new Decided to use the redone barracks of Fort Baker, now know as Cavallo Point Lodge, to lead you to the Golden Gate Bridge as the fog started to pull away in latter part of the evening. The area around Fort Baker to me has always been the underrated in terms of photographic compositions.

On a side note, I'm starting to review, compile, and properly process images of surfers at Fort Point and The Blue Angels during Fleet Week. Hopefully and time permitting, I will be able to get those galleries up at some point soon.

New Photo Added - Steam https://www.seanpedruco.com/blog/2021/3/new-photo-added---steam This is one of those January in San Francisco images of fog and The Golden Gate Bridge. Honestly, I said it once and I'll say it a million times. fog in the winter is way more unique in this area that what people here term as "Fogust".

The fog in this image came out of nowhere and wasn't predicted by any weather service or app. Yeah, I know that's a big thing these days and seems to be getting more popular. That being said, it's kind of like investing. When it gets to a point where there are too many people on the bus, it's time to find another another one.

It's the one cool thing about going out and photographing in all types of weather conditions, especially when your dealing with the same subject matter more or less. The color here isn't that typical apocalyptic evening sunset, but the diffused light of a calm and cool winter brings out the details in the entire image without having to deal with the typical haze of a shot like this as the fog passes like the steam of a percolating cup of coffee. The more pictures you see of this type of composition, the more you will begin to notice how the heat and atmospheric distortion will result in squiggly cable lines and blurry deformed buildings in the city beyond. Some of it can be chalked up to documenting a moment in time or making an artistic choice, but all in all I prefer my images to be sharp.

All of this brings me to my one piece of advice. Always be your worst critic. If you do that, it's your first step into a larger world of photography. By that I don't mean, ignore criticism. Just focus on your vision and your individual technique.

New Photo Added - Above And Beyond https://www.seanpedruco.com/blog/2021/3/new-photo-added---above-and-beyond Sorry for the being down for awhile, but have been dealing with a wicked sinus infection and even though I've been able to edit here and there, I haven't been able to post or shoot much in the past two weeks.

The latest image added today is of The Golden Gate Bridge north tower in low fog shot close up at Vista Point using a telephoto lens. This was one of those days where the fog basically held on all day for the most part and I was able to move around Marin and The Bay Area getting different kinds of shots throughout the day.

You'll probably have noticed by now that most of my shots are in between 70mm and 400mm and this one sits right in at about 200mm. Because it's alittle after the sun had risen in a clear sky and I enjoy long exposures no matter what time of day it is, I used a 10-stop ND Filter and was able to present this to you as an uncropped 10 second exposure.

There's something about keeping images as clean and uncluttered when thinking about pieces that will hang well on a wall. Sometimes when there's too much color, texture, and real estate in an image, it's easy to get lost in what you're trying to convey. Unconventionally at times, I'll take the leading lines and foreground out of the equation and hit the viewer over ahead with the main subject. New Photo Added - Red Sky At Night https://www.seanpedruco.com/blog/2021/3/new-photo-added---red-sky-at-night The evening I shot this was memorable not for the picture itself, but the sky is incredible here. It was one of those evenings where I completely got lost in the color and beauty of the light that I completely immersed myself into capturing it without being aware of my surroundings.

I can't lie. This entire day was fantastic from dawn (I shot at Battery Spencer that morning) to dusk. For the evening, I started the the hike up the trail towards Engagement Hill near Wolfback Ridge with all of the intentions of shooting The Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline which I did, but the light to my immediate right kind of came out of nowhere and I pointed my other tripod and other camera down Rodeo Valley and just started snapping away. It was beautiful with the color changing from yellow, to gold, to red, then pink.

The memorable part came while as I was shooting, refocusing, and recomposing images out towards the Pacific Ocean, I turned around to see a coyote just sitting down chillin' no more than 10 feet away from me. Evidently, he just came up to see what was going on and rest. After a while, he got up and began tracking a man walking two small dogs along the trail below. I find the coyotes in the headlands pretty good about not being aggressive towards humans, but it's always a good idea to keep an eye on your surrounds and not get lost in the image.

So here's one for that coyote. No, I didn't take a picture or try to interact with the coyote. I just let the wildlife do what they do without bothering them. I've seen my fair share of deer, coyotes, bobcats, and racoons at the headlands, but luckily I've never come across a mountain lion in that vicinity.

New Photo Added - Red Gate https://www.seanpedruco.com/blog/2021/2/new-photo-added---can-hardly-wait Digging back into the past for a 2014 shot with a 2021 edit. As far as my editing style in 2021 goes, I don't really use any Lightroom presets. I begin with the standard camera profile, profile corrections, and fix any chromatic abberation in Lightroom and then usually just bounce it into Photoshop for more detail changes to curves and levels. It's really a simple process for me at this point. The longest part of the process is essentially the same as when I started, removing dust spots and hot spots that are inherent with digital cameras.

It's the main reason amongst a few as to why I've never hocked lightroom presets, photoshop training, workshops, or one on one training. Will that change? I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure I can pass on a few nuggets here and there, but I'm more interested in the conceptual aspects of photography focusing in on why people do things a certain way and is there a better way to do and look at things.

This image was shot at 400mm and really focused on the vibrant red sky above trees on a ridge off in the distance in Marin County. It doesn't have the traditional composition points and exposure you'd normally see from me, but art really is less about rules and more about connecting with what you feel. I really wanted something that had some kind of poster vibe.

Over time and as more and more people flock to The Marin Headlands or Mount Tamalpais, I try to find different perspectives from time to time. If anything, it keeps me interested and engaged. The result is this image which was captured as the tule fog was continuing to stretch out as sun was rising in the morning. i just really liked the waves of fog that surround the main subject, which of course is The Golden Gate Bridge.

Anyway, I came across this gem of yes, you guessed it The Golden Gate Bridge and fog. This was a time in the summer of 2016 where The Salesforce Tower was still under construction and below the skyline, but It probably would have been off camera right given this composition. It's alittle tougher now to align Coit Tower because of the shrub growth, but back in 2016 it was still pretty manageable.

New Photo Added - Never Feel Left All Alone https://www.seanpedruco.com/blog/2021/2/new-photo-added---never-feel-left-all-alone In the latter half of 2020, I was able to capture a picture of somebody off in the distance down Slacker Hill in the Marin Headlands as he was taking a phone picture of The Golden Gate Bridge enveloped by fog. What makes this picture special is that it was taken in the moments when the sliver of light points right down the trail and leads you to the bridge around sunset.

New Photo Added - Caught In A Rush Of Tule Fog https://www.seanpedruco.com/blog/2021/2/new-photo-highlight---caught-in-a-rush-of-tule-fog Those hidden gems of winter fog in The San Francisco Bay Area has to be when the tule fog reaches the Golden Gate Bridge and flows in the opposite direction out towards The Pacific Ocean. I know alot of people in the area enjoy the summer months of fog as seen from the top of Mount Tamalpais in Marin county, but trust me this type of fog is much rarer and more technically challenging to capture.
